The Cost of Unexamined Assumptions

Some of the most consequential decisions we make are influenced by ideas we never consciously chose.


Not because those ideas are hidden or complex, but because they often operate beneath conscious awareness.


Consider how often two intelligent people can encounter the same situation and arrive at entirely different conclusions. The same conversation, opportunity, challenge, or set of facts can produce entirely different interpretations.


At first glance, it is tempting to assume that one person possesses information the other does not. Sometimes that is true. Often it is not.


In many cases, both people have access to the same information. What differs is not the information itself, but the framework through which it is interpreted.


That framework is built upon assumptions.



We do not experience reality directly. We experience reality through interpretation, and interpretation is built upon assumptions.


Most assumptions are never consciously chosen. They are absorbed through experience, reinforced through repetition, and gradually accepted as fact. Long before we begin evaluating a situation, assumptions have already begun shaping how we see it.


The assumptions that shape our lives most profoundly are often the ones we are completely unaware of.


And the less aware we are of them, the more power they tend to have.


People tend to question ideas they disagree with. They challenge arguments they find unconvincing and examine perspectives that conflict with their own. What they rarely question are the ideas that feel obvious. The assumptions that have become so familiar they no longer appear to be assumptions at all.


If an assumption feels like reality, there is rarely any reason to question it. Why would you? From your perspective, it is reality.


This can occur in surprisingly ordinary ways.


A person assumes their options are limited. Someone assumes they already know how a conversation will unfold. Someone assumes it is too late to begin again. Someone assumes that because something has happened before, it will continue happening in the future.


A person assumes they already understand the problem they are facing.


Another assumes the circumstances around them define what is possible.


None of these necessarily announce themselves as assumptions. They simply appear to describe the way things are.


That is often how assumptions operate: not as ideas we hold, but as truths we no longer realize we are assuming.


Over time, those assumptions begin influencing decisions, behaviour, expectations, and possibilities. They determine which opportunities appear realistic, which risks appear acceptable, which conversations seem necessary, and which futures appear attainable.



The cost of an unexamined assumption is rarely immediate.


More often, it appears gradually - as a path not taken, a conversation never had, a possibility dismissed before it was fully considered, or a decision repeatedly postponed.


Not because those outcomes were inevitable. But because an assumption quietly determined what seemed possible long before a conscious decision was ever made.


This is one reason capable people can remain stuck despite possessing the intelligence, resources, and information necessary to move forward.


The obstacle is not always a lack of knowledge. Nor is it always a lack of effort.


Sometimes the obstacle is an assumption that has become mistaken for reality.



Many assumptions are useful. Many are accurate. Many help us navigate the world effectively.

The greater danger is that we may never think to examine them at all.


Assumptions rarely arrive announcing themselves as assumptions. They arrive as conclusions, as common sense, or simply as the way things are. And that is precisely what gives them their power.


The greatest limitation of an assumption is not that it may be wrong.


It is that we may never think to question it.
